Just
in case the
name
doesn't tip you off, one listen makes it clear that the music of
Swamp Cabbage could only come from one area -- the Louisiana bayous and
northeast Florida palmetto thickets that songwriter Walter Parks calls home.
Parks (who also keeps himself busy playing lead guitar for
Richie
Havens) describes the Swamp Cabbage sound as “Northeast Florida-style,
fatback, boogaloo blues stirred into a gumbo of Louisiana ragtime.” Swamp
Cabbage is a raunchy foot-stompin’ tip of the hat to
Chet Atkins,
Billy Gibbons,
Tom
Waits,
Doc Watson and
Dr. John.
It's new Southern music--different from, yet keeping with, the
North
Mississippi All Stars and
Mofro.
Parks’ fingerpicked electric guitar honks like a razorback hog. Drummer Jagoda
grooves like he’s leadin’ a New Orleans funeral parade, and Matthew Lindsey’s
hollow-body bass barks like a tuba through a fuzz box.
Although their new CD, Honk, was recorded in St
Augustine, the band now all reside in the New York area.
