The
Small Potatoes sound like the soundtrack to a 1950s juvenile delinquent movie,
replete with vengeful lovers, juke joints, and an abundance of
Wanda
Jackson-style sass. Singer/guitarist Polly belts out catty bad-girl lyrics
about jitterbuggin’ boys and moonshine stills, backed by a breakneck rhythm
section who—judging from the devilish tempos—must certainly be a couple of
fast-living no-goodniks hopped-up on bop pills. According to the band’s bio,
lead guitarist Sam has been called “the best
Tele picker who doesn’t play a Tele.” Well, whatever he’s playing, he plays
the hell out of it, drenching every available space with a nonstop racket of
reverb-heavy rockabilly runs. These ‘taters may be claim to be small, but
there’s nothing tiny about the noise—or the trouble—they can stir up. Catch
these curfew breakers if you can, and be ready for some good ol’ house-rockin’
wild times.
