Purists
might argue whether the Roulette Sisters are actually “country”, “blues”, or the
ubiquitous “old-time”. Name it what you like; these three women will whup your
ass, slowly and sweetly, like the hard-livin’ Delta queens they so obviously—and
expertly—emulate. But don’t call it a copycat act—these soulful sisters are a
force all their own, channeling the ghosts of American music’s raw and dirty
roots into a softly swinging sound both fresh and timeless, and breathing new,
sexy, life into the lost art of the double entendre. (“Keep on churning ‘til the
butter comes,” anyone?) Mamie Minch’s dollish good looks betray a tough, lowdown
set of pipes and a firece fingerpicking style on the resonator guitar. Guitarist
Meg Reichardt honeys up the mix with a Jazz-Age voice and intricate Gibson-warm
leads, and Megan Burleyson fleshes it all out with flashy brushes-on-washboard
rhythm and the all-important third-part harmonies. And what harmonies they are!
Even on record, each individual voice shines through, and when they choose to
blend, the effect is flawless—and more than a little breathtaking. It used to
be, you had to make a deal with the devil to get a sound this good, but to
suggest so would be an insult to the obvious hard work, talent, and love of the
material that these gals bring to every song they spin.
