The
term “Alternative Country” has become a slippery slope, tacked onto any sincere,
acoustic-toting songwriter with half a twang, and too often incorporating only
the lamest elements of both genres. With a band like Radio Ghost Town, though,
the label really does apply. The lyrics are country enough, full of longing and
booze and salvation (or any combination thereof), but the rest is pure rock,
with an overdriven, jangly guitar sound reminiscent of The Replacements or an
early R.E.M. album. As might be expected from a three-piece, the tunes are
light on flourish and heavy on the energy—the kind of straight-ahead, rag-tag
bunch of rockers you wouldn’t be surprised to find in some overgrown roadhouse
on the wrong side of town, playing their hearts out way past closing time.
