Kings County Queens
The folks in Kings County Queens write the sort of sweet, meandering vocal stories that your old country-loving grandmother could rock her chair along to… provided grandma doesn’t mind an occasional reference to hookers or Thorazine. “Old-time” without being kitschy or irrelevant, this is country music at its most sublime—a stripped-down, lazy stew of heady songwriting, subtle musicianship, and pure, breathy vocals that will haunt you long after the song’s left and gone. The band has a truly collaborative feel—the tender, upfront vocals of Chris Bowers harmonize perfectly with Daria Grace’s classic high-’n’-lonesomes. Suzanne Price’s accordion weaves, at various moments, from backwoods eerie to Southwest stomp, and Daria’s baritone ukelele (the requisite odd, old-time instrument) adds a unique plunk over Chris' warm guitar work and a bone-tight rhythm section. The fact that, onstage, the band often plays sitting down, family-reunion style, speaks volumes about their ensemble nature, and is a testament to their ability—even at their slowest and quietest— to keep an audience mesmerized.
